Free GPS routes!
This site provides free routes, tracks and waypoints for your Global Positioning Satellite system receiver.
The site aims to provide:
- Routes in .GPX format, this is a common GPS data exchange format that frees the end-user from being tied to specific hardware, mapping or software products.
- Help with configuring your GPS receiver and associated software.
- Guide to third party GPS software (including free utilities).
- Help with using commercial mapping products.
- Choosing the right GPS receiver.
The primary aim of the site is to provide free GPS routes or links to places they can be found. There are other websites dealing with most of the other aspects in sometimes quite extensive detail. It is not intended to replicate those here but to provide links to those resources. There is some information on the same topics but that is a summary of my experience or research on a subject rather than a repeat of what someone else has made available on the internet.
The most important factor is to have some kind of standard file format for GPS data exchange. GPX seems to fit the bill and so my aim is to publish ways of converting as wide a range as possible of GPS file formats to and from GPX format and encourage use of GPX as the common intermediary format for sharing routes via the Internet. It doesn't serve anyone except the manufacturers to create routes which are difficult to share between different makes of software and hardware.
